Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, very cold, cut into ½-inch cubes
  • ½ cup ice water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup blanched slivered almonds, toasted and ground
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add cold butter cubes and work them into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add ice water until the dough comes together. Shape into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least an hour.
  3. Mix sugar, heavy cream, ground almonds, additional flour, almond extract, vanilla extract, and salt in another bowl to create the filling.
  4. Roll out chilled dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Spread the almond filling over half of the dough. Fold over the other half and crimp edges to seal.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake kringle for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Prepare glaze by mixing powdered sugar with milk or cream. Drizzle over warm kringle and garnish with slivered almonds if desired.
