  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (frozen)
  • 2/3 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 large egg (separated)
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped ham

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in chives and cheese.
  3. Grate frozen butter into the flour mixture using a box grater. Mix until crumbly.
  4. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg yolk; reserve the egg white. Combine wet ingredients with the dry mixture until clumpy.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead gently into a disc about eight inches wide. Cut into wedges.
  6. Brush tops with buttermilk and egg white mixture; refrigerate for 15 minutes before baking.
  7. Bake for 22–25 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.
