Ingredients

Scale
  • 7 cups sliced apples (peeled, cored)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (cut into pieces)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C) and position the rack in the lower third.
  2. Toss sliced apples with lemon juice in a large bowl; set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour over apples and stir until coated; let sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Roll out one pie crust to fit your pie dish; refrigerate while rolling out the second crust.
  5. Fill the bottom pie crust with apple mixture, dot with butter, then cover with the top crust. Seal edges and cut slits for steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top crust with egg wash (egg mixed with milk) and sprinkle coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes; reduce temperature to 375°F and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
